Great Books for the First Day of School

Welcome to my blog. This blog is for an EDM practice course. Group B members are being asked to list the titles of books that can be read on the First Day of School to students as a welcome. Members are also being asked to discuss why they feel their books are a great choice. The book list can cover grades K-6.

  1. I love books. I buy a book every chance I get. But, I do not have any first day of school books. There is one book in my preschool class that is called LOOK OUT KINDERGARTEN, HERE I COME by Nancy L. Carlson. The preschoolers always love reading this book because it helps them understand what they will be doing in Kindergarten. I did a search on the internet and found a lot of books that reference the first day of school. Another choice could be COUNTDOWN TO THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL by Annmarie Harris and Keiko Motoyama. Also, THE TOP TEN WAYS TO RUIN THE FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL by Ken Derby may be a good book to read to older children.

  2. I teach special education and frequently hear my students complain that they cannot read. I always like to start the year off by reading Patricia Polocco's "Thank You, Mr. Falker". It is very inspirational and yes, I cry every time I read it!

  3. I personally like the "Little Engine That Could" by Watty Piper. I bought this book for my daughter and she loved it. It is easy to read. This book has an important but simple message for us all. I like scholastic books as well. One in particular "If I Could Take A Mouse To School" by Laura Numeroff. I also like the Step Into Reading books. The program offers five levels that accompany children from thier first attempts to reading success. The children can progress through the steps at their own speed, while developing some confidence in thier reading.

  4. I love all the books mentioned, especially those Patricia Polocco and Laura Numeroff authored. I feel that one of the most important things a teacher can do is have a great book selection that includes a large variety of books on different reading levels so that all students will have something to read. When I was a student, I always looked forward to reading time because I knew my teacher would be reading another great book.
